Vigilance group captures hoodlums in Obi home town

Members of a local vigilance group on
Wednesday arrested four armed robbery
suspects at Agulu, the hometown of
Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State.
The vigilantes apprehended the robbers
after they had killed one of their victims in
the neighbouring town of Awgbu.

It was learnt that the robbers engaged in a
gun battle with the vigilance group before
three of them were demobilised, while the
fourth member fled.
He was, however, traced and arrested at
another village in Agulu, Nwanchi.

The leader of the gang, identified as
Favour (aka King) was said to be from
Umunze. Two of the armed robbers, who
refused to disclose their names, were said
to hail from Ebonyi State and Ogbaru area
of Anambra State. The fourth one, Sunday

in Agulu.

The robbers confessed to killing one
woman from Awkuukwu at Agulu as she
was returning from a trip to Achi, Enugu

They also confessed to shooting and killing
another person from Awgbu on Monday,
the fallout of which led to their capture.

Reacting to the development, the Senior
Special Assistant to the Governor on Media
and Publicity, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, said,
"The motivation given to community
vigilance groups in the 177 communities in
the state has started paying off."

The Chairman of Agulu Vigilance group
commended the government, saying the
new security -quipped vehicles provided
by it helped in nabbing the robbers.
He added that the stipends paid to 10
vigilante members in each town out of the
177 communities in Anambra boosted their
morale.

The state police command spokesman, Mr.
