The Delta Patriots Awareness and Support Initiative, DPASI, has staged a 100 man walk in the streets of Agbor, headquarters of Ika South LGA, Delta State, distributing male and female condoms, as well as enlightening the people on the risks of unprotected sex.
The group who earlier held similar rally in Asaba, Delta Capital city, last Wednesday, also displayed posters and banners bearing various inscriptions, all in a bid to re-awaken the consciousness of the youths to the menace of HIV/AIDS, unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases and infections.
Our Correspondent who witnessed the rally reported that residents of Agbor trooped-out in large numbers to receive the latex rubber, while many others listened attentively to the message being preached by the Patriots.
Speaking to our reporter, a resident of Agbor who simply identified himself as Kelikume, expressed appreciation to the group for the gesture, urging other individuals and groups to emulate the gestures of DPASI.
“I never knew something like this was happening. I only ran into them and was first attracted by the branded T-shirts they wore. Their message is just like every other message that people will shy away from. But the truth is that whoever ignores this does so at his/her own peril.
“This is a good approach, and am personally grateful to the group for this event. I join my voice to theirs, to tell youths to be protective of themselves when indulging in pre-marital sex that is if they can’t wait till they are married”, he stated.
Addressing a large crowd of people gathered to get their share of the august gift, National co-ordinator of the group, Patriot Jude Vincent Oshiagwu , who led the rally, stressed that in a situation where one could not practice abstinence, the use of condom remains the only way the spread of STDs and STIs could be checked.
While encourage couples to stay faithful to their partners, Oshiagwu also observe couples can also use condom for proper child-spacing and checking of unwanted pregnancies bearing in mind the harsh economic situation of the country. He urged those present at the rally to take the message back home that HIV/AIDS is real.
